CAN Transceivers

The CAN transceiver has two tasks:

  • Receiving: it adapts signal levels from the bus, to levels that the CAN Controller expects and has protective circuitry that protect the CAN Controller
  • Sending: it converts the transmit-bit signal received from the CAN Controller into a signal that is sent onto the bus

The following is a list of known manufacturers of CAN transceivers.
Not all of there products are listed but sometimes products worth mentioning. Always check the manufacturers product pages.

Manufacturers working on CAN FD capable transceivers are marked with a CAN FD smily :-) The main issue of CAN FD capable transceivers is the symmetry of the rising and the falling edges, which are required above 1 Mbit/s.

Analog Devices

  • ADM3055E new member of the iCoupler family of galvanic-isolated CAN transceivers, complies with ISO 111898-2:2016, bit rates up to 12 Mbit/s, low loop delays of 150 ns, ±40 V bus fault protection on CAN bus pins CAN-FD, :-)
  • ADM3054 Transceiver with galvanic isolation, 3 channel iCoupler. Logic Voltage supply is 3.3V or 5V, bus voltage supply 5V. Isolation 5KVRMS. Max bit rate 1Mbit/s , temp range -40°C to +125°C. 16pin SOIC-W.

  • ADM3053 Signal and Power Isolated CAN Transceiver with Integrated Isolated DC-to-DC Converter


  • ATA6560 and ATA6561 Compliant with ISO11898-2, ISO11898-5 and SAEJ2284, Supporting CAN FD :-) up to 5Mbit/s. supply voltage 5 V, IO voltage 3-5 V, SO8 and DFN8 package. The March 2015 CAN Newsletter (CiA) has an article on page 16-17.


Cobham (formerly Aeroflex)

UT64CAN333x series :-). rates from 10 kbit/s to 8 Mbit/s, radiation performance of 100 krad. Suited for flight applications.

DMOS and ELMOS do have CAN transceivers for 11898-2/-5/-6. The companies are working on CAN FD transceivers.



MC33901 and MC34901 High-Speed CAN Transceivers for Industrial and Automotive Applications with high EMC performance and high ESD robustness and low power consumption of 8µA in stand by mode. Other features are

  • ±6kV ESD, >36Bm DPI
  • 5V and 3.3V I/O compatibility with auto-detect
  • Excellent EMC performance supports CAN FD up to 2 Mbps

Both are different in:

  • MC33901 Automotive specific built-in “Tx Dominant Timeout” feature
  • MC34901 Industrial built-in support for long-length and low baud rate networks

Holt Integrated Circuits

  • HI-3000H 1-Mbit/s CAN transceiver for avionics applications. It is specified to operate from -55 °C to +175 °C for plastic packages and -55 °C to +200 °C for the ceramic Cerdip-8 package. The component is compatible with the Arinc 825 specification and the ISO 11898-5 standard. Up to 120 nodes may be used in one CAN network.

Infineon Transceiver Finder

For CAN High Speed applications (ISO11898-2, ISO11898-6), Infineon offers three transceivers

The MAX14878–MAX14880 family of high-speed transceivers improve communication and safety by integrating galvanic isolation between the CAN protocol controller side of the device and the physical wires of the CAN bus network. All transceivers operate up to the maximum high-speed CAN data rate of 1Mbps. Input common-mode range is ±25V, wide 1.71V to 5.5V supply voltage range, 40°C to +125°C,

  • MAX14878 up to 5000VRMS (60s) of galvanic isolation.
  • MAX14879 provides up to 2750VRMS (60s) of galvanic isolation,
  • MAX14880 up to 5000VRMS (60s) of galvanic isolation.


  • ATA6570 High-speed CAN FD Transceiver with Partial Networking, provides local and enhanced remote wake-up capabilities. Very low power consumption in Standby and Sleep Mode. Beside local wake-up via WAKE and remote wake-up pattern according to ISO 11898-2:2016 and also additionally supports ISO11898-2:2016 compliant CAN partial networking. Configuration the SPI. It also features a watchdog, a Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) and automatic adjustment of the I/O levels to the I/O level of the connected microcontroller via the VIO pin. ATA6570 is a CAN-FD device but can be easily configured via the SPI as Non-FD for Classical CAN, CAN FD silent, CAN FD passive or as CAN FD active device, in order to fulfill the corresponding application requirements. :-)

  • MCP2561/2 High-Speed CAN transceivers ISO-11898-5, low standby current consumption (<5 µA typical). VDD= 4.5V to 5.5V. Both meet CAN specification requirement “GIFT ICT Group Conformance Test Specification V1.0”
    :-) Microchip claims that its MCP2561/2FD transceivers are suitable for data-rates up to 8 Mbit/s. The maximum propagation delay is 120 ns and the loop-delay symmetry is ±10 % for bit-rates up to 2 Mbit/s.
    • MCP2561 SPLIT pin to stabilize common mode in biased split termination schemes.
    • MCP2562 VIO Supply Pin to Interface directly to 1.8V to 5.5V I/O, internal level shifter on digital I/O pins.
  • MCP2551 High Speed 11898-2 CAN Transceiver (1st generation - Not recommended for new designs)

TI claims that CAN transceivers SN65HVD257, SN65HVD256 and SN65HVD255 are CAN FD ready up to 2 Mbit/s. They provide extremely short propagation delays.

  • ISO1050 is a galvanically isolated CAN transceiver that meets the specifications of the ISO11898-2 standard. The device has the logic input and output buffers separated by a silicon oxide (SiO2) insulation barrier that provides galvanic isolation of up to 5000 VRMS for ISO1050DW and 2500 VRMS for ISO1050DUB
